Sound Amplifier App for iPhone & iPad: What Works
iOS is not like Android here. Apple ships a ladder of hearing tools rather than one amplifier, and the top rung is not an amplifier at all — it is FDA-authorized hearing aid software. Work up the ladder in order. A third-party app is the right answer at a specific rung, not the first thing to install.
The four rungs, in order:
- Live Listen (free): Control Center → Hearing → Live Listen. Turns the iPhone or iPad into a remote microphone streaming to AirPods, Beats or Made for iPhone hearing devices. Best single trick on the platform.
- Headphone Accommodations (free): Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual. Amplifies soft sounds and adjusts tone, with a guided setup or an audiogram imported from Health.
- Hearing Test and Hearing Aid feature (free, needs AirPods Pro 2 or 3): A different category entirely — regulated software authorized by the FDA in September 2024, for adults 18+ with perceived mild-to-moderate loss. If you have the hardware and it is available where you live, this beats every amplifier app.
- A third-party amplifier app: Right when you do not own AirPods Pro, when the regulated feature is not available in your region, or when you want live multi-band control the built-in tools do not expose.
- What iOS still lacks: no Auracast broadcast support was announced at Apple's June 2026 developer conference, and no app of any kind can amplify the audio coming down a phone call.
The mistake to avoid: running two amplification layers at once. Stacking Live Listen on top of AirPods amplification produces a delayed echo that makes speech harder to follow, not easier.

Rung 1: Live Listen
This is the most useful and least known feature on the platform. It turns the iPhone or iPad microphone into a remote mic and streams what it hears to your earbuds.
- Add the control. Open Control Center, touch and hold, tap Add a Control, then find Hearing. On current iOS you can search for Live Listen directly in the control list.
- Connect your earbuds. AirPods, compatible Beats, or Made for iPhone hearing devices paired under Settings → Accessibility → Hearing Devices.
- Tap Live Listen, then place the device. On the table in front of whoever is speaking, or beside the television. Not in your pocket.
That placement point is the whole feature. A phone in a pocket hears fabric; a phone in front of the speaker hears the speaker. Microphone position beats processing quality far more often than people expect, which is why Live Listen frequently outperforms wearable amplifiers for television and one-on-one conversation across a table.
The practical limits: range is finite, so the device has to stay reasonably close; it works with Apple and Beats headphones plus MFi hearing devices rather than any earbuds; and because the audio travels over Bluetooth, there is unavoidable delay. Test it against a talking head on screen before relying on it — if lips and voice drift apart, this rung is not for you.
Rung 2: Headphone Accommodations
Under Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual, Headphone Accommodations amplifies soft sounds and adjusts tone for Apple and Beats headphones. There is a guided Custom Audio Setup that builds a profile from short listening comparisons, and you can import an audiogram from your hearing professional into the Health app and use that instead.
It applies to media, and optionally to phone and FaceTime calls. Conversation Boost, on AirPods Pro in Transparency mode, narrows the focus toward the person in front of you — the closest thing iOS has to directional speech pickup without moving up a rung.
One behaviour worth knowing before you spend an evening tuning it: if you enable the Hearing Assistance features on AirPods Pro 2 or 3, your Headphone Accommodations settings are overridden. The two do not stack, and the newer feature takes precedence. That is by design, and it is the correct outcome — but it surprises people who have carefully configured the older tool.
Rung 3: The Hearing Test and Hearing Aid Feature — a Different Category
This rung is not an amplifier and should not be compared to one. In September 2024 the FDA authorized the first over-the-counter hearing aid software through the De Novo pathway, with a 118-subject clinical study showing that users who self-fitted achieved benefit comparable to professional fitting of the same hardware. "Hearing loss is a significant public health issue impacting millions of Americans," the agency said in announcing it (FDA press announcement). The decision established special controls for self-fitting hearing aid software as a recognized device category.
In practice, on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 with current software, you get a hearing test based on pure-tone audiometry that runs in about five minutes at home, results stored in the Health app, and — if the test indicates perceived mild-to-moderate loss — a hearing aid feature that shapes ambient sound to your own audiogram. You can also import an audiogram from a clinician instead of taking the test. Adjustments cover amplification, balance, tone and Conversation Boost, and the settings live on the earbuds, so they keep working when the phone is not nearby.
The honest caveats
- It is region-locked. These are regulated health features that require authorization in each market, so availability differs by country and rolls out gradually. If it is greyed out where you live, that is why.
- It is age-gated and scope-limited. Adults 18 or older, perceived mild-to-moderate loss. Severe or profound loss, asymmetric loss, children and medically complex cases are outside it entirely.
- It requires specific hardware. The current generation of AirPods Pro. Older models and most non-Pro AirPods are not part of this feature.
- Battery is the real-world constraint. All-day amplification is demanding, and the earlier generation ran noticeably shorter than the current one in this mode.
If you have the hardware, are in a supported region, and your loss is in scope, this is the strongest option on iOS and it costs nothing extra. Saying otherwise would be dishonest. Everything below is about the cases where one of those three conditions does not hold — and given that fewer than one in five American adults who could benefit from hearing devices uses one, with an average nine-year delay after diagnosis (Hearing Loss Association of America), those cases are numerous.
The Stacking Mistake
Here is a failure mode specific to iOS that almost no guide mentions. Because the platform offers several amplification layers, it is easy to end up running two at once — for example Live Listen streaming the phone microphone while the earbuds are simultaneously amplifying ambient sound themselves.
The result is two versions of the same speech arriving milliseconds apart. Reviewers testing the current AirPods Pro in exactly this configuration have reported a delayed echo that makes the combined stream louder but more confusing rather than clearer. It is a textbook comb-filtering problem, and no amount of volume fixes it.
The rule: pick one amplification layer and turn the others off. If you want the phone as a remote microphone, disable earbud amplification. If you want earbud amplification, leave Live Listen alone. The same applies to a third-party app — run it instead of the built-in tools, never on top of them.
Rung 4: When a Third-Party App Is the Right Answer
Four situations make an app the correct choice rather than a redundant one.
- You do not own AirPods Pro. The regulated hearing features need specific Apple hardware. If you use wired earbuds, third-party buds or over-ear headphones, the top two rungs are simply unavailable to you — but an app works with whatever you already have.
- The regulated feature is not available where you live. Health features require per-market authorization. A consumer amplifier is not subject to that constraint, which is exactly why it is also not a medical device.
- You want live multi-band control. Headphone Accommodations gives you a profile and a tone control; the hearing aid feature gives you amplification, balance and tone. Neither exposes a multi-band equalizer you can move while someone is talking.
- You need the interface in a language iOS does not serve well. An accessibility tool whose controls you cannot read is not accessible.
Set expectations correctly, though. Any third-party amplifier app on iOS is a personal sound amplification product in regulatory terms — consumer software with no premarket review and no binding performance requirements (FDA, hearing aids and PSAPs), intended "for people with normal hearing to amplify sounds in certain situations" (FDA consumer update). It is not permitted to claim it treats hearing loss (FDA guidance), and the professional bodies have long flagged the grey market that ignores this (ASHA).
What to demand from any iOS amplifier app
- A stated output limiter, on by default. The voluntary consumer standard puts maximum output at 120 dB SPL and self-noise at 32 dBA (ANSI/CTA-2051) — reasonable things to ask about.
- Low, stated latency. Regulated hearing aid software is legally capped at 15 ms (21 CFR 800.30). No app has to meet that, but it is the only hard number available. A peer-reviewed evaluation of smartphone hearing apps found "many apps exceeded the recommended level for processing delay" (Nguyen et al., Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology).
- Frequency shaping, not one slider. Consonants live in the high frequencies; low rumble masks them. A single volume control does neither job.
- On-device processing. An always-on ambient microphone captures other people's conversations. If the listing will not say whether audio stays local, assume it does not.
- Price shown before payment. Regulated hearing aid software must disclose every fee and subscription before taking payment details. Unregulated apps need not — which makes voluntary transparency a useful quality signal.

What iOS Does Not Give You
- Call audio amplification. No app, Apple's or anyone's, sits inside the call stream to raise the far-end voice. Amplifier apps process what the microphone hears in the room. The workaround is speakerphone plus earbuds — real, but with added latency and no privacy.
- Auracast broadcast audio. Venue broadcast reception over Bluetooth LE Audio (Bluetooth SIG) is available on recent Android releases. No support was announced at Apple's June 2026 developer conference, which leaves a real capability gap for anyone who attends looped or broadcast-equipped venues.
- Deep low-level audio access for third parties. iOS gives apps less control over the audio path than Android does. That means less variance between devices — an advantage — but also a floor on how much an app can optimise latency.
- Anything for severe loss. Every tool on this page tops out well below what a fitted device delivers.
Research is pushing toward device-agnostic amplification built around a listener's own thresholds rather than one manufacturer's hardware (Mass General Brigham, March 2026), which would narrow the gap between owning the right earbuds and owning any earbuds. That is not where the platform is today.
iPad-Specific Notes
Almost every guide on this topic ignores iPad, and the differences matter.
- Live Listen and Headphone Accommodations both work on iPadOS, and the larger device is often easier to position on a table facing a speaker — a genuine advantage for lectures, meetings and group settings.
- The hearing test and hearing aid features are supported on a compatible iPad as well as iPhone, subject to the same hardware, age and regional conditions.
- An iPad has no cellular calling on most models, so the call-audio limitation is largely irrelevant; FaceTime audio, by contrast, benefits from Headphone Accommodations when the call setting is enabled.
- Battery is far less of a constraint than on a phone, which makes an iPad a good choice for a fixed listening position such as a television or a desk.
Setup Checklist: Eight Steps
- Take the hearing test if your hardware supports it. Knowing your audiogram informs everything else.
- Add Hearing to Control Center. Three taps to start amplification, not three menus.
- Pick one layer. Live Listen, earbud amplification, or an app. Never two.
- Position the device deliberately. Facing the speaker, on a surface, not in a pocket or a bag.
- Set the lowest gain that works. Chasing clarity with volume produces louder distortion, not better understanding.
- Run the lip-sync test. Two minutes of a news presenter. If lips drift, change layer or go wired.
- Try every ear tip size. A poor seal causes feedback and leaks low frequencies; too tight causes occlusion.
- Test in the situation you care about. A quiet living room predicts nothing about a restaurant.
Two boundaries apply regardless of rung. Sudden hearing loss, loss in one ear only, ear pain or drainage, new one-sided tinnitus, hearing change with dizziness, or any known moderate-to-severe loss mean a clinician rather than a setting (IHS position statement). And the WHO estimates more than a billion young adults are already at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss from unsafe listening (WHO fact sheet, March 2026) — an amplifier at maximum gain is unsafe listening with extra steps.
Summary
On iOS the honest answer is a ladder, not a product. Start with Live Listen and correct placement — free, ten seconds, and it resolves more complaints than anything else here. Add Headphone Accommodations if media and calls need shaping. If you own AirPods Pro 2 or 3, take the hearing test and use the regulated hearing aid feature: it is the strongest option on the platform and it costs nothing extra.
