The best sound amplifier app is whichever one passes six specific tests on your ears — and you should start with the free one already installed on your phone. Both mobile platforms ship an amplifier in the accessibility layer, neither advertises it, and most people who pay for an app never tried the one they already own.

Free first. If the built-in amplifier does nothing for you, a paid app probably will not either — the problem is more likely your hearing than the software. If it helps but frustrates you, that is exactly when paying for better processing makes sense.

The most relevant is a peer-reviewed electroacoustic evaluation of smartphone hearing apps, which found that "many apps exceeded the recommended level for processing delay", that high-end apps matched amplification targets better than low-end apps, and that most performed relatively poorly against dedicated hearing aids (Nguyen et al., Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology). That study is several years old and the category has moved, but its central finding holds: variance between apps is enormous, and latency is the most commonly failed specification.

One structural point sets the expectations. Sound amplifier apps are personal sound amplification products in regulatory terms — consumer software, not medical devices, with no product code, no premarket review and no binding performance requirement (FDA, hearing aids and PSAPs). Nothing forces any of them to measure or publish anything. That is precisely why a test bench beats a star rating.

Start Free: The Amplifier Already on Your Phone

Both platforms ship one. Neither puts it anywhere you would find it by accident.

Android

Open Settings, go to Accessibility, and find Sound Amplifier. On Pixel devices it is preinstalled but hidden from the app drawer until you add it; on other Android phones it installs free from the app store. Samsung ships the same capability under Accessibility → Hearing enhancements, labelled "Amplify ambient sound."

The controls are better than the obscurity suggests: noise reduction, boost for quiet sounds, and separate boost sliders for low and high frequencies — each configurable independently for the left and right ear. It works with wired or Bluetooth headphones, and there is a conversation mode on newer Pixel hardware that narrows the pickup toward the person in front of you.

iPhone and iPad

There are two separate tools, and most people find neither. Live Listen turns the device into a remote microphone and streams what it hears to your AirPods or Beats headphones; you add it to Control Center under Hearing Accessibility, then tap to start. Headphone Accommodations, under Accessibility → Audio & Visual, amplifies soft sounds and adjusts tone, with a guided custom setup that builds a profile from short listening comparisons or from an audiogram imported into Health.

Separately, and worth distinguishing carefully: the Hearing Aid feature on recent AirPods Pro is not an amplifier app at all. It is regulated software — in September 2024 the FDA authorized it as the first over-the-counter hearing aid software through the De Novo pathway, with a 118-subject study showing self-fitting produced benefit comparable to professional fitting (FDA press announcement). Different category, different rules, different expectations.

The remote-microphone trick nobody mentions

Both platforms let you put the phone next to the sound source rather than on your body. Place it on the table in front of the person speaking, or beside the television, and keep your earbuds in. You get the audio at your own level while everyone else keeps the room at theirs. For television and for one-on-one conversation across a table, this beats most wearable amplifiers outright, because microphone position matters more than processing quality.

What Paid Sound Amplifier Apps Actually Add

Built-in amplifiers are deliberately simple. Paid apps compete on the things that simplicity leaves out. Seven of them are worth money; the rest is packaging.

  1. A multi-band equalizer you can move while listening. Two boost sliders are a start. Four or more bands, adjusted live while someone is talking, is a different tool.
  2. A speech-focus mode. Lifting the 1–4 kHz band where consonants live, while cutting low-frequency rumble that masks them. This is the difference between louder and clearer.
  3. A hard output limiter. A ceiling the app will not cross regardless of input. Built-in tools generally cap system volume; a dedicated limiter is a separate mechanism and it is the safety-critical one.
  4. Saved presets per environment. Restaurant, television, car, lecture. Reconfiguring sliders every time is the reason most people stop using an app after a week.
  5. Lower and more consistent latency. Processing efficiency directly determines whether lip-sync holds.
  6. Fully offline processing. Nothing recorded, nothing uploaded. Ambient microphone audio is among the most sensitive data a phone can capture — it contains other people's conversations, not just yours.

Research is moving in the same direction. 💡 Judge a paid app on the first three items only. Presets, ecosystem support and marketing language are conveniences. Bands, speech focus and a limiter are the product.

Each test isolates one specification.   • Hearing-loss claims. "For the hearing impaired," "hearing aid replacement," "restores your hearing."   • Permissions beyond microphone and Bluetooth. Contacts, location and storage access have no role in amplifying sound.
  • No mention of an output limit anywhere. The one genuine safety feature in this category, and the one most often absent.
  • Reviews mentioning echo, hiss or whistling. These map directly onto latency, self-noise and feedback control. Users describe specification failures in plain language.

The professional bodies have been flagging this grey zone for years: a substantial market exists selling amplification to people with real hearing loss under consumer-electronics labelling (ASHA).   2. Use wired earbuds if latency is marginal. Bluetooth adds delay on top of whatever the app costs you. If the lip-sync test is borderline, a wired connection often converts a fail into a pass.
  3. Set gain low and leave it. Find the lowest level at which normal conversation is comfortable and stop there. Chasing clarity with volume makes speech louder and muddier, and it is how amplification becomes a hazard.
  4. Match the ear tips. A poor seal causes feedback and leaks away low frequencies; too tight a seal causes occlusion, the boomy sensation of hearing your own voice inside your head. Try every tip size in the box before blaming the app.
Before you conclude an app is bad, redo the tests with the phone on the table and wired earbuds. Roughly half of "this app is useless" is actually "this phone was in a pocket."

When an App Is Not the Answer

None of these tools diagnoses anything, and a few situations rule all of them out. Sudden hearing loss, loss in one ear only, ear pain or drainage, new one-sided tinnitus, hearing change with dizziness, and any known moderate-to-severe loss all mean a clinician rather than a download. The International Hearing Society is direct that anyone suspecting hearing loss should be evaluated before self-treating with an amplifier (IHS position statement). Anyone under 18 is outside the scope of every equivalent regulated product.

There is also a quieter failure mode. Around 28.8 million American adults could benefit from hearing aids and fewer than one in five uses one, with an average nine-year delay between diagnosis and first device (Hearing Loss Association of America). A free app that makes the next two years survivable is genuinely valuable — and it becomes a problem the moment it replaces the appointment rather than bridging to it.
