A sound amplifier is any device that increases the power of an audio signal. In everyday use the term covers three unrelated product families: personal sound amplifiers you wear to hear better, phone apps that turn your handset into the amplifier, and home audio amplifiers that drive loudspeakers. They solve different problems and are not interchangeable.

Which one you need, in five lines:

The Core Definition (And Why the Word Is Confusing)

1. Personal Sound Amplifiers (Sound Amplifier Listening Devices)

The FDA calls these personal sound amplification products and describes them as intended "for people with normal hearing to amplify sounds in certain situations" — birdwatching, a distant lecturer, a quiet talker (FDA consumer update). They are explicitly not intended to compensate for hearing loss; that is the legal definition of a hearing aid.

The practical consequence: PSAPs are not medical devices, carry no product code, and require no premarket review. They are overseen only as electronic products that emit sound (FDA, hearing aids and PSAPs). Quality between two visually identical units can differ enormously, and the professional bodies have flagged that many devices marketed as amplifiers are in fact sold to people with real hearing loss (ASHA).

How a personal sound amplifier works

  1. Capture. A microphone converts ambient sound into an electrical signal.
  2. Shape. The signal is split into frequency bands so speech frequencies can be lifted more than rumble. Cheap devices skip this and boost everything equally.
  3. Compress. Quiet sounds get more gain than loud ones, fitting the world into a narrower comfortable range.
  4. Limit and deliver. A hard output ceiling caps how loud the device can ever get, then a receiver plays the result into your ear.

Step 4 is the one that matters most for safety and the one budget hardware most often omits. An uncapped amplifier will happily pass a slammed door or a passing siren straight through at full gain.

Who they suit, and who they do not

  • Good fit: restaurants and family gatherings, TV at a volume that suits everyone else, lectures and services, birding and nature listening, and bridging a wait for an audiology appointment.
  • Wrong tool: sudden hearing loss, loss in one ear only, ear pain or drainage, new one-sided tinnitus, hearing change with dizziness, known moderate-to-severe loss, and anyone under 18. Those need a clinician, not a purchase.

The scale of the underlying problem explains why the category exists at all. Around 28.8 million American adults could benefit from hearing aids, yet fewer than one in five uses one — and among those who do act, the average delay after diagnosis is nine years (Hearing Loss Association of America). Amplifiers occupy that nine-year gap.

Before you compare products, check one spec: does it state a maximum output and is the limiter on by default? If the listing does not mention output at all, treat that silence as the answer.

2. Phone Sound Amplifiers: The Device You Already Own

The fastest way to find out whether amplification helps you is to spend nothing. Both mobile platforms ship a sound amplifier in the accessibility layer, and neither is well advertised.

On Android, the feature lives under Settings › Accessibility › Sound Amplifier. It uses the phone microphone, plays through wired or Bluetooth headphones, and gives you separate controls for noise reduction, boosting quiet sounds, and boosting low or high frequencies — with independent settings for each ear.   • Remote-microphone use, which is often more effective than any wearable for TV and one-on-one conversation across a table.

The honest limitations

Latency is the real constraint, and it is invisible in marketing copy. A peer-reviewed electroacoustic evaluation of smartphone hearing apps found that "many apps exceeded the recommended level for processing delay" and generally fell short of hearing aids on amplification targets (Nguyen et al., Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology). Wireless earbuds add delay on top of the app's own. Test lip-sync against a talking head on TV before you rely on it.

  • A phone in your pocket is in the wrong acoustic position for conversation. Keep it on the table, facing the speaker.

  • None of these tools is a medical device, and none diagnoses anything.

3. Home Sound Amplifiers: Watts, Impedance and Why More Power Rarely Helps

This is a completely different purchase, and it turns up in the same search results because the word is the same. A home audio amplifier takes a low-level signal from a source and raises it to a level that can move a loudspeaker cone.

The four specs that decide the outcome

  1. Continuous (RMS) power into a stated impedance. "100 W" means nothing without "into 8 ohms, both channels driven, at stated distortion." Peak or "max" figures are marketing.
  2. Impedance compatibility. A 4-ohm speaker demands roughly twice the current of an 8-ohm one. An amplifier not rated for 4 ohms will run hot and clip early.
  3. Speaker sensitivity. Measured in dB per watt at one meter. This is the spec that actually controls loudness — a speaker 6 dB more sensitive is as loud on 25 W as a less sensitive one on 100 W.
  4. Headroom. Music peaks run far above average level. Most audible "distortion at volume" is an underpowered amplifier clipping on peaks, not a speaker failing.

Return to the decibel arithmetic here. Going from 50 W to 100 W buys 3 dB — a change most listeners describe as slightly louder. Going from 50 W to 500 W buys 10 dB. Choosing more sensitive speakers is almost always the cheaper route to the same result.

The TV case, where the two worlds meet

"I can hear the TV but I cannot understand the dialogue" is one of the most common queries behind this keyword, and more amplifier power is almost never the fix. Modern film and drama mixes place dialogue in the center channel and push effects wide, so a stereo or flat-panel setup thins out speech. The effective fixes, in order of cost: enable the TV's speech or dialogue mode; add a soundbar or center channel with dialogue enhancement; or use a phone amplifier as a remote microphone so you get the audio at your own level.

If the TV is loud enough but unclear, the problem is the mix or your hearing — not the amplifier. Adding watts makes an unclear signal louder and no clearer.

4. Venue Sound Amplification: Loops, Receivers and Auracast

There is a fourth family that most buying guides ignore, and it is free at the point of use. Under the 2010 ADA Standards, "in each assembly area where audible communication is integral to the use" of the space, an assistive listening system must be provided where audio amplification is present (2010 ADA Standards, Section 219). Theaters, lecture halls, courtrooms, cinemas and public meeting rooms are all covered.

The standards are specific. The number of receivers scales with capacity under Table 219.3, at least 25% must be hearing-aid compatible through neckloops that couple to a telecoil, and the system must deliver a sound pressure level between 110 dB and 118 dB with a 50 dB volume control range and a minimum 18 dB signal-to-noise ratio (ADA technical requirements summary; HLAA standards summary [PDF]). If you have never asked a venue for a receiver, you have been paying for an amenity you did not use.

What changed in 2025–26: Auracast broadcast audio

The traditional options — induction loops, FM and infrared — all require the venue to install and maintain dedicated equipment, and users to borrow, wear and return it. Auracast, built on Bluetooth LE Audio, removes both frictions: one transmitter broadcasts to an unlimited number of receivers with no pairing, and listeners join a stream roughly the way they join a Wi-Fi network or scan a QR code (Bluetooth SIG, Auracast for assistive listening). Crucially, the audio comes straight from the sound desk rather than being picked up out of a noisy room.

Deployment is now real rather than theoretical. UK theaters have replaced twenty-year-old infrared systems with Auracast-based installations (The Hearing Review, April 2026), and in August 2026 a major UK and Ireland cinema chain rolled out an Auracast assistive listening system across 200 screens at 18 venues (AV Magazine). One industry figure framed the shift as "normalizing accessible audio everywhere" (Bluetooth SIG, February 2026).

The honest caveat, which vendor pages omit: it is still too early to say that Auracast installations satisfy ADA requirements, partly because the relevant international standards are not expected until late 2027 (Center for Hearing Access).   1. Write the problem in one sentence. "I lose words in restaurants" and "my speakers distort on loud passages" lead to opposite aisles of the shop.
  2. Test whether it follows you. A difficulty that appears in every room points at hearing. One that only appears in a single room points at that room, its speakers or its source.

Safety: The One Risk in This Category

Sound amplifiers are safe with one significant exception: a wearable device with no maximum output limit. Because it sits in your ear canal, a transient — a siren, a slammed door, a dropped tray — passes through at full gain. That is the mechanism by which a device bought to help hearing can harm it, and it is entirely preventable with a limiter. The WHO estimates that more than a billion young adults are already at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss through unsafe listening practices (WHO fact sheet, March 2026).

  • Keep gain at the lowest level that solves the situation, not the highest the device allows.
  • Confirm the output limiter is on by default and cannot be silently bypassed.
  • Rule out earwax before blaming the device — occluding an already blocked canal makes hearing worse, and it is trivially fixable.

And note the marketing line: promoting an amplifier as a hearing aid establishes an intended use that would make it a regulated device. It is prohibited, and it still happens routinely in online listings (FDA regulatory guidance, August 2022). Judge the product by its specifications and its stated regulatory status, not by its title.
